Winter renovations

We have been enjoying Winter in Tassie so far this year, lots of beautiful chilly mornings with a few rainy days.  I kind of like the cold days here, once they warm up enough to get outside without freezing your fingers off anyway.

We have recently undertaken to renovate our lounge room, kind of got forced into it by having our little inbuilt wood fire fall apart, and trust me you don’t want to live without heating in Mole Creek in Winter!  It turned out that we could not find a replacement inbuilt wood fire that would fit into our open fireplace.  The little second hand one that we bought when we moved in was actually the only one we could find that would fit in there and it is no longer made.  After much consideration we decided to replace the inbuilt wood fire with a free standing one instead, we had picked up an old Kent fire as parts for the one in the caravan ages ago and it was in very good condition so we decided to install that.  However there was a bunch of things that needed doing first and we have spent the last 4 weeks getting the job done.  We pulled down the chimney,

filled in the resulting gaps and then decided that we really should level the lounge room floor as well since it bent rather like a banana and had 13cm of difference between the highest point and the lowest.  🙂

So we put a level floor on top of the old one and put insulation in between

and covered it all with a lovely new piece of carpet off cut.

Then we could finally get around to making a hearth and installing the wood fire, which was what started it all, and it was wonderful to be able to warm the place up again!  Then of course we had to rearrange everything and Kim built in a desk/bench for the computer gear and TV etc.

It is nice and cosy now and seems more spacious!
